Best ICD-9 CM workbook and textbook? want to start a medical billing office…?

I am looking into opening a small medical billing office, with the intention of getting certified in the next 6 months, but I need to start studying for it now. I was hoping someone would be willing to point me in the right direction, there are so many coding books available. I just want the best one for me… something that provides good information in an organized manner, along with opportunities to practice as I go. Any ideas? helpful tips on what to look for? I have been taking medical terminology classes and other classes related to Medical Billing but feel that if I had a book in front of me I would feel more comfortable about it. Thank you!

Laureen Jandroep’s CPC training course ( http://cpcexam.ellsed.com ) is the best around for what you need. It covers both medical billing and coding.

While its main objective is to prepare you for the AAPC’s Certified Professional Coder exam (which is one of your objectives) I’ve found it a one-stop comprehensive resource for ICD-9 CM procedures, actual practice tests and subject video lessons.

Medical Student and medical life?

Hello there! I posted this in careers…but I thought it would get more hits under medicine. I was wondering how/when people start families if they are wanting to become a doctor. If the husband and wife are both going to medical school, when is a good time to start a family? Obviously, I it is too hard to be a mom and go to med school because it is too much work, so do most people have kids after med school? After residency? If so, does that mean that you have to wait a few years before starting/joining a practice (I want to be a pediatrician). What is life like with both spouses as medical students and eventually doctors?

There is no "good" time to have a baby, period! I had my first daughter before I started med school, and my second during residency. Being a mother is difficult overall, and adding in a "second job" (such as med school, residency, practice, etc.) adds to the difficulty. It’s really tough to do a good job at both and impossible to give 100% to both. That said, in general, schedules are a little more flexible and forgiving in medical school than residency. If you can at all plan it, I’d suggest trying to get pregnant during your third year of med school so that the baby is born during 4th year – that’s the freebie year when you get your fun electives and attendings are surprised when you actually show up for rounds. Plus there’s a whole month off.

Residency is a whole other ballgame, because any time you take off means extra work for your colleagues. They can be pretty unforgiving when they are overworked to start with… and then you call in because you have morning sickness or your baby is sick…. Actually, it’s pretty hard to call in sick unless your residency program allows it. That’s when having a supportive spouse is paramount. I found that I needed a full-time nanny while in residency, and boy is that expensive when you’re making a couple of dollars an hour! (not kidding about that hourly wage)

Once you’re out in practice, things get a little easier, particularly in a female-dominated specialty such as peds. Women physicians are a hot commodity in primary care specialties, and it’s generally understood that women want to have families. It’s probably a lot tougher in surgical specialties, though I think overall the field of medicine is becoming much more accepting of female physicians having families. Gosh, good luck – it’s a long road ahead, but very very rewarding!!

Oh, and lots of doctor-doctor couples do it and survive!

How long does it take for a pretty bad knee sprain to heal?

i sprained my knee skiing a week ago and i cant put any pressure on it – it hurts too bad. I went 2 the doctor and i am getting an MRI. My swim team practice starts in 10 days and I wanna b able to swim. So how long will my knee sprain take to heal?

Nope, you won’t be ready, sorry. An injury of that type can take 6 weeks to heal and likely another 6 weeks before it gets back to normal – that is of course if it is a sprain. If it is more, then the time to heal could be significant, especially if you require surgery.. You should avoid all exertion that could cause additional damage.

What are the best ways to increase visibility of a website for a medical practice & make it findable in google?

I am setting up a website. How can I increase visibility of the website in the search engines? How can I bring-it up to the first oage if someone hit the key words? This is website for a nephrology practice.

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?…… and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using
such "generic" queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who’s my end user – is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one’s goods and services.

And the very last category – "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Good luck!

What is the difference between an Internist and a Family Practice Doctor?

I am in the process of finding a new primary care Doctor, and am lost as to which kind of doctor is better to have.

Over all is better to have one rather than the other?

Thanks for any advice you can give me

You want a family practice doctor. An internist is a doctor who specializes in a wide array of diseases and disorders of the body and generally knows how to manage them.

Effective Facial Rejuvenation- Non Medical Procedure Effort to Restore Youthful Skin

A quick way to restore the appearance of a younger age to human face is by performing cosmetic surgery. Choice of medical procedure  include laser skin resurfacing, skin tightening, microdermabrasion, facelift surgery, eyelid Surgery and so on. Not only that these procedures incurred a very high cost, which most of us can’t afford to pay, yet it need a recovery period with strict medication care. Needless to mention the risk for cosmetic surgery such as infection, pigmentation irregularities, textural changes, skin surface irregularities, burns and scarring.

Unless your life depends on it and this is the best alternative available,  you are financially able to spend this amount of money, I would not advise you to resort to cosmetic surgery. Consider the risk and paint you have got to endure, the result will not be permanent as well, as your skin will still age and you might even need to embrace for whole life, the permanent damage caused by cosmetic surgery.

However, that does not mean there are no other ways for your facial rejuvenation remedies. We will need to go back to basic, the natural and safe way of facial rejuvenation process. It’s a painless, cost effective, healthy and long lasting facial rejuvenation practice that work for everybody irregardless of your age, your profession or your gender.

Facial Rejuvenation for everybody will need to start with cleansing the face daily. Avoid all corrosive ingredients or any synthetic chemicals in your cleansing cream because you want to wash your face but not hurting it. Clean you face minimal twice daily and the best time is when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed. In the day time, applying age-defense  day cream that contain high concentrations of unique active ingredients proven to reduce fine  lines and wrinkles, and make your skin softer and younger-looking. You should consider using eye contour gel which reduces wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness around your eyes and this gel must not cause irritation to sensitive skin around the eyes. Whitening day cream made of natural ingredients is good at lightening your skin while also making your skin look younger and softer. The combination of these facial rejuvenation cream will keep your face nourished and supple in the day time.

As for night time, use restorative night cream which contains high concentrations of active ingredients that will work to rejuvenate your skin while you sleep. Night cream compliments day cream in combating the main aging factors such as loss of collagen and elastin, lower levels of hyaluronic acid and oxidation through the action of free radicals. Targeting at reducing  wrinkles, sagging and dull skin, and  many other visible signs of aging.

Beside daily care for your facial rejuvenation practice, some weekly applications will further improve and help to reverse the aging effect. Weekly use of hydrating mask which is usually rich, creamy and moisturizing, help to give an extra boost  in nourishment to your skin whatever its condition. Your skin will be able to regenerate itself under the ingredients such rich plant oils, plant-and-vitamin-based antioxidants, and essential fatty acids and lipids. We are not able to cleanse our face thoroughly due to the busy life, weekly use of cleansing mask with revitalizing cleansing treatment effect will ensure your skin is deeply cleansed, revitalized and soothe your skin,  leaving it feeling smooth and soft. Alternate the application of these two types of mask weekly, along with  the daily day and night cleansing and cream applications, facial rejuvenation practice has become part of your life. Not only that you will look or appear to be younger, but you will actually feel like one younger person. Unlike cosmetic surgery, the pain you encountered during recovery period will always remind you that you are old, the fear of going through that experience again will even make you feel older.

Feeling young and good is  part of life, you can make it your whole life by practicing facial rejuvenation the natural way without resorting to plastic surgery to maintain your youthful appearance but feeling old from the inside. Natural facial rejuvenation is a lifetime practice, and I am very sure you do not want to make plastic surgery a lifetime practice, do you?

Dental Practice Act: How to Keep a Constant Flow of Patients in Your Practice

As a dental practice act, I find that keeping a constant flow of patients is one of the biggest challenges in dental marketing. Unfortunately, even the greatest dentist in the world will go broke without a constant stream of new patients who pay, stay and refer, regardless of how long he’s been in the practice. I am going to share with you 4 strategies as a dental practice act on how to deal with such a challenge. Following these strategies as a dental practice act will help you achieve success in your business.

Dental Practice Act 1: Create A Constant Stream Of Patients

As a dental practice act, your job is to create a constant stream of specific high quality new patients in your practice. For me, if you are attracting the precise type of patients in your practice, who accept your treatment recommendations ( and they refer as well), it is a good start. Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in the business, you always have to keep new fresh patients coming in.

Dental Practice Act 2: Reactivate Existing Patients

The inactive and unfinished treatment base is the hidden goldmine within your practice. So as a dental practice act, I advise my clients to go after this hidden goldmine. How do you do this in dental marketing ? Here’s how:

send out 3-step to 4-step direct mail campaign

offer your patients credits towards any cosmetic dentistry (whitening, etc)

do voice broadcast to your patient’s home or phone calls (works tremendously)

use e-mails as a multimedia approach

Dental Practice Act 3: Create A Referral System

The next thing that you can do as a dental practice act is to create a referral system that gets to bring a flood of referrals to your practice. However, you should put in mind that if the referral system is based on your own efforts alone, then you do not have a true system in place. Always remember that a great referral system is a system that is team-generated and team-oriented. In dental marketing the team has a responsibility and accountability for those results.

Dental Practice Act 4: Get Patients To Choose More Of Your Services

Another dental practice act for the business is that you should get existing patients to choose more services from you. Whether you do an Invisalign, implants, TMJ, veneers, etc…. it doesn’t matter. You think your patients know this stuff because it’s your life, but they really don’t. They are just too busy with their own lives. What I advise my clients to do is that if they have new services, pick one or two services a month that they want to promote through their newsletter or postcard or even e-mail. In dental marketing, it is important that you make sure that you remind your patients of the other services that you have. With this, two things will happen: first, you get more patients to choose more of your services (which is a positive thing), and second, you get more word of mouth by just talking to your existing patients about the services that you have and the problems they solve. Doing this will let existing patients refer people more often.

So always remember these strategies as a dental practice act as you go on with your dental marketing business. These will not only give you a constant flow of patients, it will also help you to achieve success in your business!

Using Medical Billing Software

After purchasing software and installing it on office computers, personnel may be surprised at the functionality of the software. software gives the user full control over all of the patients medical records with a few clicks of the mouse. Patients can be found by conducting a quick search and medical billing software can therefore serve as an electronic database of patients.

What is also nice about billing is that many of the programs are fully customizable; the doctors’ names are easily added to the application, patient name data entry is simple and many of the features can be customized as well. Billing schedules can be tailored to suit the needs of the medical office, and fee schedules can be set by the user of the software.

When it comes to using software, some applications will allow users to double appointments. Further, more advanced billing programs permit triple booking of appointments. Plus, the same applications also check to make sure that a patients insurance benefits are current and will cover the visit. This saves the office staff hours of work. Ultimately, what the program features will depend on the manufacturer of the software; hence, it pays to shop around for software to ensure that one is getting the best program available.

Suppliers of software are happy to provide medical offices with brochures pertaining to their software applications. Moreover, free quotes are provided to office managers and providers looking to get software applications for their office.

If you run a practice or if you run your own billing business, you have probably received tons of information about medical billing programs. You probably already have your billing systems in place, but you should definitely check out software. software is a great buy because it helps to expedite the billing processes. Not only does it make billing more efficient, you can save all of your billing records in a more accessible, comprehensive manner.

If you are looking to purchase software you can easily locate a vendor that deals with medical billing software online. What may not be so easy is determining what vendor offers you the best price on medical billing software and what vendor supplies enough support to accompany the product. Consequently, knowing what questions to ask the vendor will help you determine which vendor you should purchase your medical billing software from.

If you run a medical practice or if you run your own medical billing business, you have probably received tons of information about medical billing software. You probably already have your billing systems in place, but you should definitely check out medical billing software. Medical billing software is a great buy because it helps to expedite the billing processes. Not only does it make billing more efficient, you can save all of your billing records in a more accessible, comprehensive manner.

An Introduction to Medical Negligence Claims

There are a number of important issues you need to establish before proceeding with a medical negligence claim against a healthcare provider. First, it’s necessary to prove that the treatment of the claimant has fallen below the minimum standard of acceptable treatment by a clinician in that particular area of medicine.

Once this has been established the next issue on the list is to prove that the healthcare provider was responsible for the patient’s care and health. In most cases a standard doctor/patient relationship would be sufficient.

In addition to this the claimant must be able to provide evidence that it was the clinical negligence that caused the actual injury or harm. The best practice to accomplish this is to establish the natural development of the illness and the likely outcome if correct treatment had been given. The result should then be compared the outcome following the negligent treatment. There may be slight variations in patient’s reaction to the same treatment which must be taken into consideration when making this comparison.

Compensation can be claimed for items such as:

• Pain & Suffering

• Change of Lifestyle

• Loss of Past & Future Earnings

• Prescription Charges & Medical Fees

• Costs of Assistance for Household Chores

• Travelling Expenses

• Special Care Aids & Equipment

• Cost of Care & Assistance

• Adapted Accommodation & Transportation

• Out-of-Pocket Expenses

The primary limitation period for England and Wales for medical negligence claims is three years from the date of the clinical mistreatment or from the date when it is realised or should be realised that a significant injury has been suffered as the result of the negligent treatment. However, this may be extended in the following cases:

• Mental Disabilities: In the event of the patient suffering from mental disabilities the limitation period does not start until mental capacity has returned.

• Minors: For those under the age of 18 years the three year limitation period does not start until the18th birthday. If the claim has not been settled or Court proceedings issued by the claimants 21st birthday the opportunity to claim compensation will have been lost.

• Court Discretion: A Court has the power to alter the time limits but rarely is this discretion exercised.
